Zion

As Alexis slept next to me my bear roared inside, triumphant. The pull to mate had been all-consuming lately and for once I seemed satisfied.

But it was wrong. How could I let this happen? For one, we were breaking every rule in the handbook. But two, how long was I actually going to be staying around?

My bear raged inside of me. I knew I was approaching the mating age, and as I got closer, at times I felt more bear than human. I could hardly control him as he protested my emotional uncertainty.

I had to get out of here. Now.

I just made it through her door when I Shifted.

As my body Changed, my bones cracked and fur sprouted. I took off at a run, deciding to get down the stairs before I was a full bear. By the time my paws hit the pavement, I knew I needed some fresh air. Luckily there were woods behind Alexis’s apartment, and I ran through them, gulping down the woodsy air. I needed to get my bear under control. I could have Shifted in her apartment.

I could have hurt her.

And that was the last thing that I wanted.

Alexis had very quickly become a part of my world. I knew I shouldn't have let her, I still had a big decision to make. Not to mention the clan already had a new member in Aiden's new wife. I wasn't sure that they would accept another human. We were an old shifter family, we were supposed to marry other shifters, keep the bloodline strong and the money even stronger. I considered reaching out to Aiden and asking him for advice but we had never really seen eye-to-eye. Luke and I were definitely closer, hell Luke was closer with everybody. But this was different, Alexis was different. I wanted to stay for her.

As I continued to climb the ridge behind her apartment I thought about her sleeping alone, unprotected. Sure she had Apple, who seemed like a great little dog, but she needed someone like me. Someone strong, who could keep her safe. I couldn't do that if I wasn't with her.

I raised my snout up to the sky as I smelled some water nearby. A trout would be tasty. I could feel my bear being torn in two directions. Food or love. The mating instinct was becoming so strong. But would she even want to be my mate?
